figureground studio is a multidisciplinary design practice engaged with public art and design projects for the civic realm. Led by Jyhling Lee, the studio is focused on enhancing the socially enabling qualities of the built environment, as well as the integration contemporary design influences between the creative arts and architecture. Following a collaborative working process, each project brings together visionary clients, design professionals, government officials, community members and leaders. The resulting works are those which seek to meaningfully engage and enrich the civic imagination.
The studio has recently completed the Regina Gateway, a prominent landscape based sculpture near the Regina International Airport in Regina, and the Origmai Goose, a new civic character, for the new John M. Harper District Library and Stork Family YMCA in Waterloo.
Other notable public art projects include Prairie Wind, Saskatoon's Centennial Landmark Plaza, Storytelling Chairs, and Five Corners, along with the 2010 publication of SASK: A Catalogue of Contemporary Architecture in Saskatchewan. Upcoming projects include a series of gateway elements for the City of Thunder Bay and an inhabitable public art sculpture for the new Regent Park Community Centre.
